I got a call today from one of my partners, who wanted to tell me about what one of the participants in our test group had told him. Our test group had tested my ultra pure pharmaceutical grade fish oil for a few months, before it was released, and the female participant that had spoken to my partner was one of our lucky subjects.

Potty Training Puppies Is Easy With These Three Steps

Getting a puppy isn’t just fun and games, there is a certain amount of responsibility in maintaining them with perhaps none more frustrating than potty training puppies. It is not as if you can tell them to use the bathroom whenever they feel like doing their business, even if you could, good luck in getting them to flush the toilet afterwards.

There's no need to worry because there are established methods you can use to make sure that your puppies relieve themselves where and when you want them to. You might even be surprised as to how easy potty training a puppy is. Simply how easy? Well easy enough to summarize in three steps:

Three Steps in Potty Training a Puppy

1. Schedule the meals to influence the call of nature - There is a certain amount of time a puppies digestive system takes to complete its cycle and get from meal to waste. The amount of time it takes your puppy to relieve itself after a full meal varies from puppy to puppy so you should monitor this time. It may take a number of monitoring sessions to decide the general amount of time but once you get it then go on to step number two.

2. Take the business inside or outside - Figure out whether you want your puppy to do its business inside your house or outdoors. One thing to keep in mind is what is important and convenient for you because you can go either way. Whether you are potty training puppies indoors or outdoors you would still have to clean up after it.

3. Plastic or paper - If you're going to train your puppy to do its business inside, then you need a good amount of newspaper and scent spray which you'll find in most pet stores.

a. When your puppy needs to do its business, put down a large stack of newspapers and spray a little bit of scent spray on it.

b. Restrict the puppy within the newspaper covered area and wait until it relieves itself. As soon as it does, let it smell the odour sprayed on the newspaper.

c. Repeat b until your puppy gets used to the newspaper or the scent it will look for either of the two next times it needs to relieve itself.

You can train the puppy to do its business outdoors by simply taking it out for a walk. It will eventually find a spot after a while and assume the position. Don't forget, as a responsible dog owner, that you need to clean up after your puppy. Eventually, when your puppy gets used to this system, he/she will display signs of wanting and needing to go outside when it feels the need to do its business.

And there you have it three sure fire easy steps for potty training puppies. It's not expensive; it doesn't take a university degree, not even awkwardly over-priced tools - just some good old patience.

‘Down Dog!’

This lesson is best taught outside, in a open area your dog trusts, free from ALL distractions. An quiet park, or your back yard is really ideal.

Start by gaining your dogs attention with a favourite, yet small treat (cut up cheese, chicken or sausage perhaps). We want to start by getting him standing in front of you.. Hold a reward in front of him, then move it slowly down to the ground in front of him, but far away to know he cant have it. Restrain the dog if you need to. Now say your 'down' command that you wish to use, both voice and hand movement and repeat it until he understands and lays down.

After he lies down, let him have his treat by moving it to him, as he is lying down.

You dont want him to get hold of the reward, until he has completed the whole motion. Dont reward him for a half job. Often, the dog wont know what to do first off. Coax him down by hand, and reward him when hes lying to satisfaction. Keep this up until your dog knows he has to lie right down before getting the treat handed to him. It shouldnt take very long if he is hungry!

Once the dog confidently lies down, next hold the food a couple of inches off the ground away from him. What we want to achieve is the dog lying down, anticipating the treat!

This will confuse him first off until you motion him down, and reward when he does the proper lie down action. 

After practise of this, start giving the ‘down’ command (hand motion and voice instruction) before you present the treat to lead the dog down.

Gradually, you should now wean the dog off the treat, so that he responds to a simple downward motion of your hand and a 'down' call. Hold the reward further and further away from him, and reduce the praise each time as you give it to him. Get him to accept your praise as reward for following the hand and voice command.

How to Deal with Puppy Whining

When puppies are cold, hungry or tired, whining is very natural for them. Mother dogs provide a safe place to sleep, warmth and milk to their puppies when they whine.

Over time, the puppy will begin to associate the two actions and will start to whine on purpose. This lets the puppy’s mother know that something is wrong or he needs something.

Puppies should be adopted between 8-10 weeks of age. It’s at this time that puppies discover that whining doesn’t have any impact with their new family; or they may use whining to manipulate their new mother (you!) into giving them what they want.

Therefore, it is commonly believed that a new puppy should be left on his own for the first night is his new home. If you respond to puppy whining with warmth, petting, cuddling, your dog is certain to feel that whining will get him what he wants.

Of course, this will require good judgment and common sense on your part. A scared puppy will require affection, reassurance and attention.
